We are so excited for the release of Beco Baby Carrier's newest release- the Gemini! The Gemini is unique because not only can it be used on the back, hip and front facing in, but the base can also be narrowed so that the baby can also face out.Now I know there is alot of controversy on facing the baby out while it is seemingly dangling by the crotch, however I think what Beco is trying to do is get the customers who would only buy facing out carriers like the Bjorn or Snuggli and showing them the beauty of others ways of carrying their baby-forward facing in, on the back etc. I think once parents realize how comfortable those carries can be, they may decide to wear their baby like that and Beco will have created a new, safe babywearer.Anyway, back to discussing the actual carrier-it is gorgeous! The Babywearing Experience

How many of you have ever worn your baby? If you have, you know that the feeling of a baby resting happily on your back or nestled on your chest is incredible. There is a certain serenity in knowing that your baby is being held so close to you and cozy and comfortable.

What is babywearing? Babywearing is the practice of wearing or carrying a baby or child in a sling or other form of carrier. There are many different ways to wear your baby and babywearing has been done since ancient times. Slings, wraps, soft structured carriers, and mei tais are just some of the ways you can wear your baby. What are the benefits of wearing your baby? I know for myself the biggest reasons I babywear is because of the closeness it brings and because I am able to carry my child and still be hands free. There are many other benefits as well- benefits both for parent and child. Babies who are worn:

cry less

learn more

are more "organized" meaning they are able to adapt to their environment more easily

are more aware of peoples expressions and words because they spend so much time in close proximity to them

For parents,there are numerous benefits as well.

While wearing a baby, parents have opportunity to easily bond with their child. Breastfeeding is simple while carrying your baby in a sling, SSC (soft structured carrier), Mei Tai or wrap. Being handsfree means that you are able to accomplish household work you would never be able to do if you had to carry your baby in your arms. It also makes shopping easier because you do not have to push a stroller while balancing everything you are shopping for.

What types of carriers are available?

Slings-Slings are available in adjustable and non-adjustable versions. Keep in mind that in a sling, the weight of the baby is all on one shoulder so I prefer slings for when the baby is little. Hotslings is a popular brand and they make both adjustable and non adjustable slings. (Please note-bag type slings, where the baby is not held close to the caregiver, are dangerous and should never be used. Numerous deaths have been associated with these type of slings.)

Wraps-A wrap is a large piece of fabric that wraps around yourself and your baby and then ties for security. Moby Wrap is one such brand.

For babies, stretchy wraps are great but most people prefer non-stretchy (woven) wraps for toddlers.

Mei Tais-Mei Tais are Asian inspired carriers that consist of 4 straps and a panel of fabric for the body. The straps tie around the waist and shoulders and the fabric panel holds the baby. Mei Tais are very adjustable, and very comfortable because of the two shouldered carry. Popular brands include BabyHawk.

Soft Structured Carriers- Soft Structured Carriers or SSCs are basically Mei Tais with buckles instead of straps that you tie. Popular brands include Ergo Baby and Beco Baby. They are very comfortable and easy to use, but not quite as adjustable as a Mei Tai. It is great for heavier or older children.

I would just like to make a note about forward facing carriers-the position that the baby is held in when they are dangling by their crotch is not good for hip and spine development. In SSCs, the baby is held in a seated position which is better. Also, because they are forward facing they are getting alot of stimulation and have no way of turning away from the action when it is too much for them. Overstimulated babies are fussy, unhappy babies.

It is so hard to get them to fit into their car seat correctly with a big, bulky snowsuit and many car seat experts will tell you that putting a baby into a carseat while wearing a snowsuit is outright unsafe because the straps are not fitting properly around the child.

ABC Kids Expo

We are back!! We took a trip to Las Vegas to check out the ABC Kids Expo and to look for newest baby and kids products on the market! What an incredible experience! Over 1,000,000 square feet packed with almost every imaginable baby item on the market. It was exhausting but at the same time it was exhilarating!

Some of the products we are really looking forward to:
Hotslings- The adjustable Hotsling AP in their 6 most popular designs! Instead of having to choose the exact size you need, you will be able to get a one size fits most sling and adjust it based on your needs. I found that as my baby changed positions from cradle carry to hip carry I needed a different size. Also, as some people lose their baby weight they may find that they need a different size sling. With the adjustable design, they can purchase one sling and they are good to go!

Bumgenius Cloth Diapers- We looove our cloth diapers. Until now we only carried those by Fuzzi Bunz however we did want to have another option for our customers and after much research (and my own trials) we decided on Bumgenius! Rocking Moses Basket Stands

When my children were born, I often put them to sleep in the bassinet that came with their stroller. It was small and cozy and I was able to keep it near me during the night. I did not like putting my newborns into a standard crib because they are so tiny. I used to put the bassinet on the floor until I discovered the Rocking Moses Basket Stand by Jolly Jumper. It is made to fit a moses basket, however many people who purchase it do use it for their stroller bassinets because it fits so perfectly.

There are a few reasons I love it. One is that it rocks, which is great for those nights when the baby refuses to go back to sleep and the only way that will happen is with tight swaddling and a rocking motion. Another reason I love it is because it keeps the baby off the floor and brings them up higher and closer to me. The bassinet was easier for me to access when it was higher and I also had this fear that in my sleep deprived stupor, I would trip over the bassinet if it was on the floor. The Sigg Controversy

When the BPA scandal broke, many people stopped using hard plastic cups and bottles and switched over to stainless steel. Yes, it was much more costly, but most people found it to be worth the extra expense because stainless steel does not have bisphenol A (BPA). Sigg was a very popular choice with parents because it was not prone to leakage and came in cute syles. Last week, however, they announced that bottles made before August 2008 did have very small amounts of BPA in their lining. The two liners look different so if you are not sure which bottle you have check out the image above for the differences. I would like to note here that Sigg never claimed their bottles were BPA free and consumers just made the assumptions that they were. They do state that they were looking for a way to create a BPA free lining for their bottle since 2006 and it took them until 2008 to implement the change. Unfortunately, many people feel mislead and are not happy to have to throw out expensive steel bottles. I would advice that you contact Sigg before throwing anything out and see what they are willing to do for you. The latest I have heard is that they will exchange them for you. You can contact them at liners@mysigg.com for the exchange. Here is the Sigg press release from their CEO "explaining" the situation. I guess the lesson we can all learn from this is never make assumptions. If someone refuses to disclose information (Sigg refused to disclose what their liner is made of), they probably have something to hide.

Bebe au Lait Reversible Double Sided Bib

This is one of the coolest new bibs on the market! Bebe au Lait managed somehow to reinvent the bib!! This bib is not only reversible by flipping it over, which many other bibs are, it also has two flaps each of which has two sides giving you a total of 4 clean areas to use as a bib. Check out the diagram which will probably clarify what I am trying to say:

Here’s how it works:

The bib has two large sides that cover baby’s chest. The narrow part connecting the two sides goes around the baby’s neck.
To use the first side, simply place side #1 in front of side #2. To use the second side, simply place side #1 behind side #2. When those two sides get dirty, you can flip the bib over, exposing the terrycloth side. Just as with the front of the bib, the back has two more “sides” that cover baby’s chest! To use the third side, place side #3 in front of side #4. To use the fourth side, place side #3 behind side #4.

Now honestly, I am not going to advise anyone to keep this bib around for a couple of days without washing just because you still have a couple of clean areas left. You can wash it before you use all four sides ;-) however this bib is really handy when going out for a while and you just NEED a clean bib, or when baby's meal is really! messy. Stroller Cupholders

One of the best and most popular stroller accessories are stroller cupholders or cupholder/console combos. They are mostly made of rip stop polyester or molded plastic and attach easily to the stroller with velcro or a simple screw like attachment.
In most cases the cupholder does not have to be removed when the stroller is folded.
Here is an example of a higher end cupholder/console combo made by Stroll-Air. It is shown on a Baby Jogger City Mini Single Stroller. The Stroll-Air console has insulated cupholders and a very nice structured look.

Here is a picture of the Jolly Jumper Stroller Caddy on a Bugaboo Frog:

Both of these cupholders have two places for drinks and a center console for change, cell phone, snacks etc. They are both equally functional but sometimes one fits certain strollers better than others.

As an aside, I would not put hot drinks in either of these-or in any stroller cupholders for that matter-because although they are pretty sturdy, I would not be willing to take the risk of it spilling.

Once you try one of these cupholders, you will not know how you managed without them- especially in these hot summer days when you usually have a drink with you.

Jazzy Toes Baby and Toddler Socks

A while ago, I saw the cutest socks on my friends son and asked my friend what he was wearing. She told me that they were socks made by Jazzy Toes and she got it as a baby gift when her son was born.
I did my research and immediately fell in love. These socks come packaged in sets of six and look like miniature shoes. Styles for boys and girls are called Sneakers, Mary Janes, Deck Shoes, Spectators etc. and they even make a variety pack for both girls and boys for parents who cannot choose just one style (the boy's variety pack is pictured above)!
They come in really nice packaging and make a great shower or baby gift.
Socks come in two sizes-0-12 months and 12-24 months. What is great about these socks is that they are pretty true to size and run larger than some other brands so that the 0-12 months actually fits a 12 month old and is not outgrown by the time they are 6 months old.

These socks are really, really worth checking out. Keep them in mind for the next baby present you have to buy!!!

As you may have read here, Mountain Buggy was in receivership and shopping around for buyers. According to the National Business Review, the stroller maker phil & ted has purchased the debt ridden company for an undisclosed amount. They will continue manufacturing the Mountaing Buggy strollers in the current factory located in New Zealand. It will be exciting to see what the two companies combined will think of. I wish they would come up with a PERFECT double stroller!!

BabyHawk Mei Tai Baby Carrier

As you may have read, I have been using a Hotsling to wear DS when I needed to be handsfree or when I did not have a stroller for him. However, I found that he was getting quite heavy and hard to carry because all his weight was being carried on one shoulder. I did some research, much of it at TheBabyWearer.com, which is an excellent resource for anyone looking for more information on baby wearing. It can be overwhelming at first but there are people there who will help you navigate through the site.

Anyway, I was considering a soft structured carrier and a Mei Tai and ended up going with a Mei Tai because of the adjustability factor. I am thrilled with my choice. Because babywearing is not big in my area, I did not really have any place to try out carries so I read reviews and decided on the BabyHawk. There are other great brands out there that I would love to try but I started with this.

Mine has black straps with this fabric. There are tons of choices but this is what I went with.

It is soooo comfortable. My DS loves it and I wear him around the house alot. I do mostly back carries and find it easy to carry him like that. I still put him on my back near a couch or bed so that we have a soft landing spot in case something happens, but the tying is getting easier. One thing I have found super helpful in distributing the weight so that more of it is on my hips and less on my shoulders is making a twist (lexi twist) around the small of the babies back.

That little trick has made a huge difference. I have tried some other tweaks such as creating a chest tie (I am not that familiar with the correct verbiage) but the back twist helped the most.

In my opinion, babywearing is worth a shot. Although you may prefer to transport your baby in a stroller, you will see how handy a baby carrier ends up being.

Breathable Bumper: The Best of Both Worlds

DaintyBaby.com recently started carrying a new item called Breathable Bumper by BreathableBaby. They make a couple of products but their main one, and the one they are best know for is their Breathable Bumper. When my DS was in a portable crib in my room, I often found him sleeping with his feet sticking out of the slats and sometimes he would wake up crying when he got stuck in them. A friend of mine has the same crib but never had that problem because she has a crib bumper around her crib which protects the baby from banging their head, arms, legs against the wood. I never felt comfortable with a crib bumper being that it increases the risk of SIDS and goes against the advice of my pediatrician, so I just left the crib bare and exposed DS to the wood! I figured he is still better off that way.

I no longer have to make the choice anymore between crib bumper vs. bare, hard wood. BreathableBaby came up with the amazing idea of making a crib bumper that cushions the wood and keeps little limbs in, but is also breathable and safe-hence the name.

Basically it is the same shape as a standard crib bumper, however instead of being made from puffy batting and fabric it is made from a mesh-like material that promotes air flow and helps maintain air access. It is slightly padded so it is cushiony but not padded enough that toddlers can use it as a step ladder. It comes in alot of colors, fits most cribs and is washable!! All in all, it is a great product and really brings the best of both worlds together.

Bugaboo Frog Gets a Discount!!! Now $629!!!

When DD was born, I agonized over which stroller to buy. At that point, there were very few Bugs in the neighborhood and I could not fathom spending $729 (the price it was when I wanted to purchase it) on a stroller!! I was thinking about some other strollers like the Inglesina or the Mountain Buggy -all in the under $500 price range but somehow I kept turning back to the Bugaboo Frog. Everyone who owned it raved about it. As one store owner told me,"The only people who don't like Bugaboos are the people who don't have them!"

I decided to splurge and make the purchase, and after tax and the Valco cupholder that I added to my purchase, it cost me over $800. Whoa!!! But, I loved, and still love my Frog to bits so it was worth it. I was glad I got it then because shortly after I purchased it the price jumped to $759!

Zoom ahead to March 2009. I am browsing the internet and see the Bugaboo Frog priced everywhere at $629!! I know Bugaboo doesn't allow discounting so what is going on? Turns out, they dropped the price!!

Latest Right Start Closing Update

This is the latest info I have about the Right Start closing-thanks Diane for the info.
"Britax and strollers only 20%. Other car seats and accessories 30-40% off. Everything else 40-50% off." Tripp Trapp seats were $100 each.
"The Greenwich store is closing Tuesday and Westport will be (closing) the following week. They are staggering the closings and moving the merchandise to the next store as each one closes."
I am not sure if all the stores are offering the same discounts or if they are all well stocked however if you have one near you it probably pays to check out what they have!
Right Start's homepage now says: "Sorry, gift cards and merchandise credits cannot be accepted at this time."

Thanks to some of my online friends who so kindly recommended new products for me to carry, I am proud to announce that we now carry Wubbanubs!!
When DS was tiny, I tried a number of pacifiers, all of which he refused to suck. One night, when he couldn't be calmed, I grabbed a Soothie pacifier I had laying around from when my nieces were by me, washed it with soap (although I probably should have sterilized it!! Oh well!! ) and put it into his mouth. Silence!! I had finally discovered a pacifier he liked!! I got a million comments on it and people literally stopped me on the street to find out what he was sucking. You don't see Soothies in my area!!
Anyway, I went online to look for stores to buy the Soothie -there are none that I was able to find in my neighborhood- and I discovered Wubbanubs!!
A Wubbanub is a small stuffed animal that is actually sewn to the tab portion of the Soothie pacifier. Because there is a stuffed animal attached, the pacifier is weighted down and stays in the babies mouth.

As an aside, Soothie pacifiers are made of medical grade silicone so they are perfect for people who suffer from latex allergies!
The idea sounded perfect and I really wanted to try it however about 2 months after he finally took a pacifier, he discovered his two fingers and that was the end of the pacifier. So, I never got to try out the Wubbanub.
I am glad I rediscovered it when a number of people suggested that I carry it. It is adorable and looks like a great product.I can't wait to hear feedback from my customers!!

Mountain Buggy in Receivership

I just saw some news that really shocked me! On January 12th, 2009, Mountain Buggy was placed in receivership due to "significant debts."
According to some managers it seems that sales dropped by a third last year. I wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that they raised the price so high on the 2008 models which caused sales to slump.
Their strollers are amazing-I hope they manage to find a buyer.

I have been checking babystyle.com lately because I had heard they were closing and their site said that their website was down for maintainance. I had a feeling that it wasn't true and today that was confirmed!! Their website now states:

We're sorry but we have suspended operation of our site.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. We hope we'll be back soon.
Any pending orders that have not yet shipped have been cancelled and your credit card will not be charged.

I am assuming they will not be back any time soon. Only time will tell.

I loved some of the things from this website! I got my kids the most adorable, quality costumes from there and when my DS was born I got him this really cozy babystyle blanket. It's a real shame!!

Other Baby Store closings

Seems like Babystyle, Tiny Ride and Right Start may be closing too. Last year, a number of Babystyle stores closed down which sort of forcasted what is happening now. Strollerinfo.com has reported that these three stores will now be closing down for good. What is your theory about why this is happening now. Obviously the economy is making it difficult for all retailers to survive, but what is it about baby retailers that so many of them are closing down? Please post comments if you have something to add.

Looks to me like they might be closing down. Baby Universe declared bankruptcy at the end of Dec. 08 and they have been having some incredible deals on their website. Bugaboo, Baby Jogger and Stokke were really reduced but the stuff is mostly gone. I am still keeping my eye out on Quinny, Mutsy and Orbit even though I do not need another stroller. They have some other good stuff in very limited quantities so check it out.

Sophie The Giraffe Teether

When my DS started teething, I began researching teethers. Since the lead scare last year, I am much more wary of what I buy and what my kids put into their mouths. As I was doing my research one teether kept coming up over an over and over with amazing reviews.
Honestly, I was skeptical. I was used to the teethers you buy in the drug store (the ones filled with water) that cost just a few dollars. This was significantly more and I couldn't imagine what makes a teether worth the price. However, when I kept seeing incredible reviews I decided to splurge. Boy was it a worthwhile investment!!
A French classic, Sophie the Giraffe is hand-painted with food grade paints and made of natural rubber in the French Alps so there is no fear of lead, BPA or any other harmful products that are commonly found in todays toys. Her company, Vulli, is relatively small, but has been manufacturing Sophie the same way for over 40 years.
Because Sophie is soft, light and easy to grasp, my DS had an easy time getting her to his mouth. She is pefect for little hands and makes a happy sound when squeezed. He especially loved gnawing at her bumpy head and long, thin legs. He just kept chomping and chomping and chomping. It goes everywhere with us!! I keep an extra one in my diaper bag! I love it because I don't have to worry about what is going into his mouth.

Aden + Anais Sleeping Bag Update

So, I just got my Aden + Anais order and the muslin sleeping bags look really great. They look soft and comfortable and cozy-just what I would want my DS to sleep in. The prints are really cute too!! Also in are the Aden + Anais hooded towel set which includes a hooded towel and washcloth. The towel is really soft terry trimmed in white, pink or aqua. They are roomy and very absorbant!! The washcloths are made out of layered muslin in a print that matches the towel. I use the washcloths all the time even for my DD and she loves them. Whenever I rinse out her hair, she uses it to cover her eyes. Because they are made of muslin, they are soft against her skin and very flexible!

Here is a review of something I don't currently sell- although I would love to in the future. I had never heard of this company but saw it on a website while I was browsing for Hanukkah gifts for my DS who is 8 months old. It intrigued me although I had a hard time finding info on it. I decided to take the plunge and buy it for a few reasons. Firstly, there was alot for him to do on it and it didn't take up all that much room and secondly it was a little different than anything he already has.
When I got it and set it up, I was surprised at how compact it was. That was a good thing because I already have tons of toys and do not need another big klutz. He immediately took a liking to it and started twirling the balls all around. He also pushed himself up on his chest so he can peek in and look at the disk that was twirling around.
Basically the toy is based on the kaleidoscope-there are angled mirrors all over adding to the motion and movement. There are activities on the base of the disc area that are fun- a twirling ball, a squeaker, a bar with small toys to push along on it, a mirror... The top part has a place to put a disk (it comes with four). The disk twirls around with music and together with the angled mirrors becomes a whirl of colors and pictures for the baby. It detaches so you can put it on the babies crib. It really is nice. It ends up being so much more than I thought it would be and it is my ds's current favorite toy!!

Aden + Anais Swaddle Blankets

Okay, I love these!! They are really great and I discovered them pretty recently. Glad I had a little baby to try them out on!!! If you have never seen them, they are these thin cotton blankets made of muslin and they are 47"x47" so they are big enough for a good tight swaddle. Until now, I always swaddled my babies with receiving blankets and they were constantly getting untucked. While researching products we wanted to carry in our store, I came across these, ordered them to try and fell in love with them.
Aden and Anais Swaddle Blankets come in tons of cute colors and patterns for boys and girls. They also come in alot of cute unisex colors which is great. They are thin and very breathable so you don't have to worry about SIDS when you use them. Even though my DS is too big to swaddle now, I still give it to him when he goes to sleep because he likes to hug something and because it is breathable I am not worried.
I have used them as a nursing cover, as a place to put DS down on for tummy time and as a burp cloth (should I be telling you that????)
They also come in a two layered version called Winter Warmth which has one extra layer for those chilly evenings and a 6 layer version called the Dream Blanket which can be used as a warm and cozy blanket in the crib or carriage.

Last Night of Hanukkah

Wow! It has been a busy week since I last posted. We had a couple of Hanukkah parties, my kids have been inundated with toys and it is time to get back to reality again. It is so much fun to have these little breaks to keep us on our toes instead of it being the same over and over and over.
In future posts I will start reviewing-or rather discussing-various products that I use for my kids. Some of them I sell and some I don't! I would love to hear from all of you-post a comment if you love or hate the product I am talking about. I would love to hear other peoples feedback!

First night of Hanukkah

Tonight is the first night of Hanukkah. I am so excited. I am like a little kid when it comes to fun holidays!!
Anyway, my mom wanted to get my DD a present and I was really trying to figure out what to get her. She is not the type of kid who likes toys. She much prefers putting her toys into shopping bags, playing with the raincover from the stroller, dividing toothpicks on the floor for all the kids she knows etc...
I posted a question asking for gift ideas for a 2 yr old and some of my online friends at a forum I belong to responded that she might like a digital camera for kids. I was deciding between that and a kiddy cd player with a mike. I couldn't seem to find the cd player-Fisher Price no longer makes it-they only do MP3 players now, so I decided to go for the camera. It was more than I wanted to spend but I really hope she will love it and use it. If anyone has experience with the Fisher Price Tough Stuff Digital Camera please post it in the comments. I would love to hear other reactions.

Catching my breath

Anyway, it has been so hectic lately, being such a busy season and all, I haven't had a chance to catch my breath. Every day we would be working from early morning until really late at night and we barely had time to sit ( at a place other than a computer!!!!)
Today it was calmer and we finally had a chance to relax a bit. I don't even seem to remember how to do it!!! I didn't know what to do with myself so I ended up baking chocolate cupcakes. Yum!!

I decided to write a blog about a subject I seriously enjoy- Baby products. I know it sounds weird that I love talking and thinking about baby stuff, but I do. It all started when I was looking for a stroller for DD. I knew nothing about anything so of course I had to do some research. That started this whole thing snowballing and sometimes I think my obsession is out of control. So does my family!! Whoever heard of someone who buys strollers just to try them out? Well, that person is me.
